NEW YORK -- Man-made fiber domestic shipments for the first three quarters of the year leave no doubt about the problems of the American textile industry. September domestic shipments of the leading fiber, polyester textile staple, according to the latest industry figures, were 128 million pounds, 9 million lower than August and 11 million lower than the year before.
For the first three quarters of '99, domestic shipments of poly textile staple were 1 billion, 70.6 million pounds, 7.3 percent below the period a year ago.
