The recent colon cancer diagnosis of baseball player Daryl Strawberry has spawned a flurry of media stories bemoaning the lack of attention given this disease. The media reports invariably overstated the value of early detection and advised older people to undergo screening tests. Few mentioned prevention despite a large body of evidence showing that many cases of colon cancer can be attributed to a high-fat, low-fiber diet. Screening tests, by definition, are given to people without symptoms in the hope of finding a disease at an early, more curable stage.
