This volume is the outcome of a Commonwealth Geographical Bureau project to examine the vexed question of land degradation and management in the tropics. With the exception of two contributions dealing with Amazonia, all the chapters draw their case-study material from Commonwealth countries, and all appear to be written by geographers. In their introduction, Eden and Parry set out their reasons for adopting 'land degradation' as their focus; the term gives equal weighting to human and biophysical processes.
