OSLO, NORWAY - Arriving by air in this one-time capital of Viking power in the last week of October can be unsettling. Barely visible beneath a blanket of low, gray clouds, the city seems to pop out of nowhere as you descend through 8,000 feet, looking isolated and small against the huge Norwegian landscape.
It turns out to be, however, a graceful, bustling, sophisticated city. Norwegians are friendly, and gracious toward language-challenged Americans.
Bits of American culture are everywhere, in fact, from the TV shows to the latte bars, and on the shelves of video rental stores. And Norwegians, it turns out, are voracious video renters.
