Two surprising studies find that African-Americans have a poorer response to hepatitis C virus therapy than other ethnic groups.
One study suggests that interferon is less effective in African-Americans than in other groups even after controlling for genotype, compliance, cirrhosis, and other complicating factors.
But the studies, while intriguing, may actually reveal more about early interferon trial recruiting practices than treatment responses. That's because blacks made up under 10 percent of the treatment cohort in both investigations.
