Self-strengthening polypropylene for body panels.

"Self-strengthening" polypropylene composites have been developed by researchers at the University of Leeds, UK. They claim their discovery may lead to the development of composite automobile panels that can be recycled.

Known as hot compaction, the strengthening process relies on threads of polypropylene that have been stretched in order to make the long molecules in the polymer line-up in the same direction. This regimented structure gives the hot compacted plastic a strength similar to those of the polymer matrix composites used in aerospace and automotive applications.
