The Pea Ridge magnetite deposit, Washington County, Missouri, is hosted by Precambrian volcanic rocks of the St. Francois terrane. Pea Ridge is a massive deposit with more than 100 million tons of ore (Arndt 1981). The bottom of the deposit has not been delineated. The late Jack Emery (Pea Ridge mine geologist; 1975 pers. com.) estimated that there are more than one hundred years' worth of mineable resources. Initial production, in 1964, began the era in which Missouri's surficial iron ore deposits were rendered uneconomic due to production from the large tonnage, high-grade subsurface deposits of the Pea Ridge mine and a similar mine, the Pilot Knob mine.
