Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has long been a controversial topic that has defied professional consensus. Beginning with Virginia Douglas's conceptualization of the disorder as based on attentional deficits (Douglas, 1980, 1983), we have seen a proliferation of changes in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and International Classification of Diseases guides. Most recently, with the advent of the DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1994), the classification of ADHD symptoms has focused on three specific subtypes: Predominately Hyperactive--Impulsive, Predominately Inattentive, and Combined Type.
