Sleep disturbances are found in up to 17% of the nondisabled school-age population (Simeon, 1985). They range from mild reactions associated with normal development (Freud, 1965) to severe disorders that have a deleterious effect on the child and the family (Ablon & Mack, 1979). Insomnia is the most frequent sleep disturbance in children, with rates ranging in different studies from 5% (Keener & Anders, 1988) to 14% (Handford, Mattison, & Kales, 1996). The rates of hypersomnia range from 1.5% (Keener & Anders, 1988) to 5% (Richman, Stevenson, & Graham, 1982) and of parasomnias, from 1% to 8% (Keener & Anders, 1988).
