On any network, computers need to be able to find each other, as well as locate and leverage the services that each system provides. Ideally, this can be done via directory services, a mechanism that resolves network addresses and points the bytes in the right direction.
Directory services let you build Web applications that can intelligently find resources on the network. They also track these resources as they are reconfigured, moved, or deleted. For example, an e-mail application can locate a user group, a word-processing application can find a printer, and a Web application can find a database regardless of where these resources exist on the network.
