The New Zealand government yesterday announced several decisions on key military modernization programs yesterday, including leasing 28 F-16 fighters from the United States that were originally built for Pakistan but never delivered.
New Zealand also decided not to buy a third ANZAC frigate as earlier planned, while maintaining the New Zealand army's $260 million re-equipment program and accelerating modifications to the HMNZS Charles Upham military sea-lift ship.
While final negotiations have yet to be completed, the aircraft would be leased at an average cost of $6.6 million for an intended 10 years, after which New Zealand would buy the aircraft. U.S. ...
