Article: Govt panel recommends streamlined rules for natural health products in Canada.

A Canadian government advisory panel has presented an interim report to a House of Commons committee urging that a new regulatory scheme should be set up for natural health products. The report's principal point is that such products are fundamentally different from drugs and therefore should be treated in a different way, and through an entirely separate system to that in place for drugs (see also page 11).

The panel - comprising representatives of the natural products industry, consumers and representatives of ethnic communities which favor herbal remedies - was appointed in May 1997 as a result of public concerns that natural products are over-regulated.
