Article: Saturated fat intake cuts stroke risk.

Higher intakes of fat, saturated fat, and monounsaturated fat are associated with reduced risk of ischemic stroke in men, according to a new study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association (1997;278:2145-2150). This is the first study to be conducted in the west which has shown this effect, although a few ecological and cohort studies in Asian populations have also suggested an inverse association of the intake of both fat and saturated fat with risk of stroke. The publication of the results has caused an outcry among health experts who have been trying to encourage the general public to eat less, not more fat.
