While it's true the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Teachers Network did not hold its first national conference until 1997 (the second was held October 30-November 1 in Oakland, Calif.), the issue that brings its members together--homophobia in the schools--is anything but new. In December 1977 two teachers talked with The Advocate--despite a mounting statewide campaign in California for the so-called Briggs initiative, which sought to fire teachers who presented homosexuality as a "viable" alternative to heterosexuality--about working conditions for gay and lesbian educators.
