Planned neutron-scattering facility may help create many new materials.
Materials scientists hope to "see" more clearly the arrangements of atoms in all kinds of substances, with the help of a new neutron-scattering facility to be built by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by 2005.
This new tool for envisioning materials promises to help create a variety of new products, such as stronger engineering alloys, more-effective drugs, and healthier foods, according to advocates of the project, a collaboration of the five national laboratories operated by DOE.
