For older or sicker patients with leukemia or other blood diseases, one of the most effective treatments--bone marrow transplantation (BMT)--often proves just a deadly as their disease. But a kinder and gentler BMT procedure may one day give these individuals their best chance for a cure.
Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle have begun testing a new generation BMT technique that involves no high-dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy, the two aspects of conventional BMT that pose the greatest risk to patients.
