"Easy, Molly. Don't let that wind spook you so!"
Betsy gripped the reins tightly as she guided the horse and wagon down narrow, snow-blown trail.
"I know you don't like backwoods travellin'," she said, "but it's safest with Redcoats on patrol. You'd rather be home. Me, too, `specially on Christmas Eve. But Pa's countin' on us to get through to General Washington! We'll do it too. Who'd ever suspect a 13-year-old farm girl and her trusty horse of haulin' supplies cross-country to Valley Forge?"
Betsy glanced upwards. A flash of crimson moved across the ridge above them.
Swiftly she headed Molly and the wagon into a thicket of pine ...
