Some Supreme Court justices, like Oliver Wendell Holmes and Louis Brandeis, are remembered for their brilliance and the eloquence of their opinions. Other justices, like Earl Warren, are admired for their leadership on the Court. Still others, like William Brennan, are remembered for their passionate commitment to a vision of the U.S. Constitution.
Justice Lewis Powell Jr., who died recently at age 90, likely will be remembered most for being the justice in the middle. He was the key swing vote at a time when the Court was often ideologically divided.
Powell was appointed to the Court in 1971 by President Richard Nixon and served until retiring in 1987. ...
