Dec. 23 -- The U.S. Justice Department has dropped its 2-year-old investigation into possible anti-competitive business practices by Plano-based Frito-Lay Inc.

The Justice Department had been examining whether Frito-Lay, the nation's largest maker of snack food, had tried to squeeze out competitors in the salty snack market by buying shelf space it didn't need and by charging unusually low prices for its chips.

"We are very pleased with their decision," said Lynn Markley, a Frito-Lay spokeswoman. "We were never accused of any wrongdoing."
