Relations between the Ottoman Empire and the Ukrainian people stretch back to the fifteenth century, though various Turkic peoples had been in close contact with the Slavic inhabitants of the lands which constitute the territory of contemporary Ukraine for at least a millennium. However, the Russian annexation of the Zaporozhian lands and other areas inhabited by the `Little Russians', as well as the collapse of the Crimean Khanate and the consequent Ottoman withdrawal from the areas north of the Black Sea in the course of almost two centuries resulted by the nineteenth century in a sharp break in these relations.
