This (Research Triangle Institute) report presents a toxicological profile of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). PCBs have been found in at least 383 of the 1,428 current or former National Priority List (NPL) sites. PCBs are a group of synthetic organic chemicals that contain 209 individual chlorinated biphenyl compounds (known as congeners) with varying harmful effects. There are no known natural sources of PCBs in the environment. Some commercial PCB mixtures are known in the U.S. by their industrial trade name, Aroclor.
