Fibrinogen, made from transgenic sheep milk, supplies a component of fully recombinant fibrin sealant. The production of recombinant proteins in the milk of transgenic animals provides a way to manufacture large quantities of complex proteins. Currently, there are at least two transgenic-recombinant human proteins in phase II and phase III clinical trials, Erica Whittaker, PPL Therapeutics Ltd., United Kingdom, told participants at the Tissue Sealants-Europe Conference, sponsored by Cambridge Healthtech Institute, and held November 19-20, 1998, in Lisbon, Portugal.
