The 1998 IFLA General Conference was held in Amsterdam from 16 to 21 August. It attracted 2914 delegates and an additional 174 officially registered `accompanying persons' from a total of 112 countries: certainly large, but not too overwhelming. Special Dutch government assistance enabled attendance by delegates from eastern Europe and many developing countries, and other grants facilitated attendance by some of those who work with the visually impaired.
