Airfield conversion projects from military to civil use have not always been successful in Germany, but one recent success story comes to mind.
After the end of the Cold War, Germany, like many other European countries, had to look after several surplus military airfields given up by the American, Canadian, French and Soviet air forces. Private investment was welcomed, since government funding was not available for major airports, let alone for the multitude of undeveloped and capital-hungry airfields.
