This is an excellent book which examines exhaustively the remaining overseas possessions of Britain and France, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
The authors discuss their criteria for exclusion and inclusion. They exclude unpopulated territories (this largely gets them off the Antarctica hook); areas that are integral parts of metropolitan states but with distinctive characteristics -- Corsica, Wales, Hawaii, Catalonia; and territories of newly independent states, thus no East Timor, ...
