Indonesia's demand for explosives is still met almost fully with imports. In 1997, the volume of such imports rose nearly twofold to 3,256 tons (worth US$ 8.1 million). For the first four months (January-April) of 1998, according to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, the volume of such imports reached only 285 tons (worth US$ 1.4 million). For all of 1998, the volume of Indonesia's explosives imports is expected to be lower than that for 1997 due to the economic crisis.
