Not many people in full possession of their mental facilities would want to dig a well by hand if they could have one drilled or driven. But this doesn't mean homesteaders aren't curious about how wells are dug. Old-time knowledge like this might come in handy again someday.
Of the three main types of wells -- dug, drilled and driven -- dug wells are the oldest and until relatively recently, the most common. In the U.S., their main disadvantages are exposure to ground water pollution and ever-lower water tables, as well as the large amount of labor involved.
