I have seen the future, and it is hard on the eyes.
This particular glimpse comes via the electronic book, which is just now entering the mass market with as great a claim as ever to the turf staked out by the 500-year-old mass-produced text. Which is to say, it holds lots of words _ far more than most books _ and it goes just about anywhere the book goes short of the bathtub.
In theory, this is an impressive accomplishment, if only because it gives rise to a dinner-table argument up there with Venus vs. Mars, Mantle/Mays, Beatles/Stones, and Impeach/Fugetaboutit. Now, we ask, which is better? The computer screen or the printed page?
