PORT CHESTER, NY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 1999--The funds held in the nation's pension and 401(k) retirement plans surged by more than 18 percent in 1998, to more than $5.1 trillion, from more than $4.3 trillion the previous year, according to an annual survey by Nelson Information, Inc.

"This growth is especially impressive because the statistics in the latest edition of Nelson's Directory of Plan Sponsors reflect asset totals on Oct. 15, 1998, which turned out to be near one of the lows for the year in the U.S. stock market, before the powerful rally in the final months of the year," said Holly DeWaters, Nelson Director of Database Content.
