Summary:The European Commission adopted a Regulation at the end of December (2815/98/EC) laying down rules enabling operators to indicate the origin of olive oil on labelling intended for consumers in the Member States. These rules stipulate that designation of origin may only mention a designation of origin or a geographical indication protected under Regulation 2081/92/EEC, that is, a Member State, the European Community or a third country. Designation of origin is optional for "extra virgin" olive oil and "virgin" olive oil and is not authorised for other olive oils.
