Antibiotics are drugs used to fight bacterial infections. There are now more than 20 groups or families of antibiotics, including some that kill bacteria and others that prevent them from multiplying.
There are also popular combinations of antibiotics such as Bactrim or Septra, which combine sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, commonly used to treat Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in people with AIDS and to treat infections of the urinary tract and ear.
Some are used to treat a wide range of infections (broad-spectrum antibiotics) and others target specific infections such as tuberculosis, urinary tract infections or gonorrhea.
