BADEN-BADEN, Germany -- A record number of international reinsurance industry executives got a firsthand glimpse of a natural disaster at their annual gathering in Baden-Baden Oct. 26-30.

After the area's worst rainfall this century, flood waters spread over as much as 70% of the spa town in southern Germany. The River Oos, which meanders past the elegant hotels where reinsurers were meeting, burst its banks. The flooding damaged some attendees' cars in underground garages and caused a blackout that forced reinsurers to hold some meetings by candlelight. However, the bulk of business at Baden-Baden already had been concluded.
