The possible future for functional food legislation in the European Union was the subject of a presentation by Basil Mathioudakis of the European Commission's DG III at the December 1998 Council of Europe's Committee of Experts on Nutrition, Food Safety and Consumer Health's Forum on Functional Foods.
In his view, reported in the Association of the European Self-Medication Industry (AESGP) monthly bulletin, Euro OTC News, many of the functional foods could fit within the framework of Council Directive 89/398/EEC on foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional uses.
