This winter, about a dozen new amaryllis cultivars are making their debut in the United States, and bulbs are already in short supply. Indeed, the amaryllis, the winter wonder on the windowsill, has blossomed beyond all expectations. According to statistics from the Dutch agriculture department, in fiscal year 1987-88, 1.7 million amaryllis bulbs were exported to the United States--about the average for the decade. A jump came in the mid-1990s, and by 1997-98, the number of imports annually had soared to 3.8 million. With an average price tag of $10 per bulb, the amaryllis trade is good business.
