Jan. 25 -- While all service charges at banks have been a lightning rod for criticism in the past, automatic teller machine surcharges are the most prominent fees targeted by consumer groups today.
Historically, overdraft and insufficient fund check charges were called the most unfair of bank fees. However, once banks adequately explained these charges act as a deterrent -- much like a parking ticket for leaving your car next to a fire hydrant -- and did more to explain how easy overdraft fees are to avoid, most consumers understood and reluctantly accepted them.
