After decades of inefficient postal service, the Ministry of Communications decided to privatize Guatemala's postal services - Directorate General of Post & Telegraph. The contract was awarded to International Postal Services of Canada (IPS), which took over operations on September 16, 1998, and will be subsidized by the Guatemalan Government:
Previously, an estimated 25% of all mailed items failed to reach their destination; delivery, when successful, took up to 19 days for internal delivery. Postal rates have now suffered a slight increase but service is expected to improve considerably. Projections are to handle ...
