Bread machines first came into the U.S. marketplace from Japan, about 10 years ago. While they originally retailed for around $400, today the devices, which come in a wide range of price points, have dipped as low as $39.99 for a basic model.
The machines work by using microcomputers that take nearly all the guesswork out of baking. Dough kneading and rising time are programmed into the machine. In fact, all the bread machine baker needs to do is accurately measure ingredients, put them into the bowl and press a button.
