In general, natural sources of N are not adequate for optimum crop production of irrigated agricultural cropping systems where yield is very often limited by the supply of N. Since yield is a function of N availability, to sustain optimum production we need to maintain adequate levels of N in the root zone where roots can absorb it. However, when the amount of N-inputs are increased, N[[O.sub.3].sup.-]-N, a readily mobile form of N, can accumulate in the soil profile. This N[[O.sub.3].sup.-]-N has the potential to be leached out of the root zone by excessive irrigation or by large precipitation events.
