During his last trip to China, President Clinton praised President Jiang Zemin as ``a visionary'' providing the ``right leadership at the right time.'' How has the Chinese leader repaid the compliment? By launching the most severe crackdown on democracy in a decade.
While in China, the president called on Jiang to release political prisoners and expand the experiments in democracy taking place in villages throughout the country. To appease the West, the Chinese government agreed to sign the U.N.
