For the forging of high-quality components, hammer processes have always offered distinct advantages over conventional press forging. Although these advantages are frequently underrated by forged product customers and component engineers, this thinking should change as computerized controls become increasingly sophisticated [ILLUSTRATION FOR FIGURE 1 OMITTED]. While many engineers still think that presses offer closer control, the fact is that precise process control does not always translate into the microstructural control that is required of highly engineered forgings.
