If any one filmmaker can be said to be responsible for the current renaissance of Shakespearean film production, it is Kenneth Branagh. In 1984, only three years after graduating from England's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Branagh became, at the age of twenty-four, the youngest actor in the history of the Royal Shakespeare Company to perform the title role in Henry V. He first came to the attention of international movie audiences with the 1989 release of his film version of Henry V, for which he wrote the screenplay, directed, and again played the title role.
