On the 25th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act, continued protection of plants and animals is itself threatened by legislative impasse.
Last August, the staff at the 10,500-foot high Land's End Visitor Center on Colorado's Grand Mesa was startled by three visitors. Odd-looking, taciturn types were not all that unusual, but nothing like these particular visitors had ever been seen before. They did not ask questions, they merely looked around to satisfy their curiosity and then left without saying a word. Of course, no one really expected them to say anything; they were California condors.(1)
