WASHINGTON _ Europe's new money is big news. On their way out are the continent's old warhorses _ francs, marks, pesetas and eight others. Replacing them is an untested, but well-trained upstart, the euro.
Already, stocks and bonds, big commercial transactions, and central bank policy are expressed in euros alone. By January 2002, euros will be in people's pockets, forever replacing the historic coins and bills of Europe's venerable nations.
But the euro is not the end of the story for Europe. While it is the boldest move to integrate Europe's fractious nations since the European Union began in 1957, it foretells of much more to come: the arrival one ...
