Feb. 5 -- While other banks' bigger deals may have grabbed the headlines last year, Memphis-based Union Planters Corp. bought more banks than anyone else in the United States in 1998.
Union Planters acquired 13 banks last year and bought branches from two other banks, industry trade publication American Banker said.
The number of deals made Union Planters the most acquisitive, American Banker said. It ranked ahead of some banks that did much splashier deals, such as the former NationsBank's $42 billion acquisition of BankAmerica Corp. NationsBank, which will take on a new name in the Memphis area this summer ...
