A cool, willowy wind
fills the dusty room.
The scent of jasmine hints
at the fragrance of the moon
like a fine, ghostly presence
on the fringe of everything;
and it is autumn.
When the crisp, icy crush
of a snail beneath my boot
feels like the weighted push
of a trembling leg through snow,
as the pure crust gives way
(gingerly at first)
to uncertain depths below.
But the linen feels so crisp
which, only yesterday,
was pulled down from the line,
folded, stored away,
then shaken out like fleece
through the curtain-drawn sunshine
