Most art history time-lines begin with a small stone sculpture of a woman that was found near the Austrian city of Willendorf. This small figure (4 1/2", 11.4 cm), created approximately 27,000 BC. was carved from soft stone. Its maker probably used natural tools such as shells, hard rocks, and pointed bones.

Another Paleolithic sculpture, Bison with Turned Head (4 1/8", 10.5 cm) was carved approximately 15,000 BC from a piece of reindeer antler.
