In gubernatorial elections Feb. 7, the governing Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) suffered a stunning defeat in the northern state of Baja California Sur, but managed a narrow victory in Guerrero state in southwestern Mexico. In the Baja California Sur race, Leonel Cota Montano, who recently left the PRI in a dispute with the party's state leadership, won the election representing a coalition formed by the Partido de la Revolucion Democratica (PRD) and the Partido del Trabajo (PT).
