NIPPON SHOKUBAI will invest 3 billion francs ($83 million) in its first European manufacturing facility. To be located in Antwerp, Belgium, the plant will produce super-absorbent polymers (SAP) for use in sanitary and hygiene products such as diapers. Construction will begin this fall.
The new site will give Nippon Shokubai an annual global SAP capacity of 230,000 tons. The company's decision to establish a plant in Antwerp follows the recent dissolution of its alliance with BASF AG in the SAP business.
