Judging by inaugural year results, the Basque government's decision to spend copious sums of money on a Guggenheim outpost has paid off [see A.i.A., July '97]. From October 1997 to October 1998, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (GMB) received 1.36 million visitors, three times as many as expected. Attracted by Frank O. Gehry's spectacular building and the museum's exhibition offerings, which included "The Guggenheim Museums and the Art of this Century" and "China: 5,000 Years," as well as the Blake-Purnell collection and a Helen Frankenthaler show, visitors exceeded 9,000 per day on key Spanish holidays.
