The AORN Journal made its debut in January 1963 as a bimonthly publication. AORN members automatically received the Journal, as the subscription price was included in membership dues. Annual subscriptions were available to nonmembers for $4; single issues were 75 cents.
The first Journal included five feature articles in its 122 pages. Topics included surgical treatment of chronic sinusitis, surgical procedures for infants and children, OR staff member development, and infection hazards associated with scrub sinks. Interestingly, the first issue included an article, "Requiem for the scrub nurse," exploring the need for surgical technicians.
